Consumables and Costs for EM Projects

This section is to help SF State researchers budget for electron microscopy work that is in progress, and also to help in preparing grant applications in which funds will be allocated for FE-SEM work.

Consumables: Available from www.tedpella.com.

16111-9    Specimen stub 12.7mm diameter

16144-9    Specimen stub 25.4mm diameter

1663-12    Specimen stub tweezers for 12.7mm stubs

1663-25    Specimen stub tweezers for 25.4mm stubs

16120       Plastic storage box with four pin mounts for 12.7mm stubs

16709       Large plastic storage box for up to eighteen stubs

16051       Conductive graphite paint (water based)

16034       Colloidal silver paint

5618-NM  Non-magnetic high precision tweezers

510           Self-closing biological tweezers for TEM grids

Costs for EM Projects:

1. EM Training: $100 all-inclusive fee for six hours of training

2. EM Time: $20/Hr for SF State users following initial training

Small Project: Two-to-four hours of microscopy per week = $2,000 - $4,000 per year

Medium Project: Four-to-eight hours of microscopy per week = $4,000 - $8,000 per year

Large Project: Eight-to-twelve hours of microscopy per week = $8,000 - $12,000 per year

3. Consumables: Order Zeiss-specific SEM stub types with correct pin length

Small Project: 200 stubs ($72), 12 large plastic storage cases ($100), 2 pair SEM stub tweezers ($30), 2 bottles conductive graphite paint ($20), 2 bottles colloidal silver paint ($60), 2 pair Dumont precision tweezers ($40). Total = $322 per year.

Medium Project: 500 stubs ($170), 12 large plastic storage cases ($240), 2 pair SEM stub tweezers ($30), 3 bottles conductive graphite paint ($60), 3 bottles colloidal silver paint ($90), 3 pair Dumont precision tweezers ($60). Total = $650 per year.

Large Project: 1000 stubs ($310), 12 large plastic storage cases ($360), 2 pair SEM stub tweezers ($30), 4 bottles conductive graphite paint ($80), 4 bottles colloidal silver paint ($120), 4 pair Dumont precision tweezers ($90). Total = $990 per year

4. Preparation Equipment (grinding, polishing, and coating for example)

Small Project: Polish and coat four specimens per week for imaging = $10 per week or $500 per year

Medium Project: Polish and coat eight specimens per week for imaging = $20 per week or $1,000 per year

Large Project: Grind, polish and coat six specimens/week for imaging and EBSD = $40 per week or $2,000 per year

Summary of EM Project costs

Small Project: $2,922 to $4,922

Medium Project: $5,750 to $9,750

Large Project: $11,090 to $15,090
